if you are thinking about going to this resort, GO! Prior to booking, i read the reviews and they weren't looking too good but i went ahead and booked anyway to see for myself. and I'm glad i did. i do have to say, i would recommend paying a little extra to stay in the newer buildings because that's what i did and it was amazing, you also get the option of a swim up pool room which i got as well. they had a decent selection for food, and a 24 hr lounge/bar which provides room service, only con is that they charge you a $20 fee every time you order room service. delivery services don't even charge that high. the staff were friendly and addressed any issues we had in a timely manner. overall, this place isn't as bad as most of the reviews make it seem.

The Senator is a very beautiful and well manicured property. Our room, Luxury Junior Swim-Up Suite, was very nice. Housekeeping did an excellent job every day. The service was very disappointing. Anytime I had to ask for something, I was treated like I was bothering them. The wait staff would literally look at you and walk away. One day we went to the sports bar for lunch. It took over 20 minutes for anyone to come to our table to take our order. We left after waiting an hour for our food, don't know if it ever came. One night at the buffet, we were almost finished with our meal before anyone filled our water glasses. You want coffee? It all comes from a machine, no brewed coffee on site. The women at reception were rude. When we checked in, one said "you can take your bags yourself". Luckily, a bellhop was nearby, saw us pulling our suitcases and came to help. The "blue shirts" harassing us about their "ULC" was annoying. I literally started avoiding the reception area because they were relentless. How many times can I say "No thank you"? The food was awful. I don't care what these other reviews say. It was dry, bland, under-seasoned, and usually cold. There was no diet Pepsi available in the restaurants for the whole week I was there. I would love to return to Puerto Plata in the future because it really is beautiful, but I will never stay at the Senator again.

It’s beautiful. Room was nice and clean, ocean view was breath taking. Good food. Everyone was very nice and willing to help. My only complaint is that they do not have enough lounger chairs and umbrellas by the pool.

Pocas sillas de playa disponible a la hora de usar y las que estaban vacías tenían pinches o toallas en ellas. Empleados se las cuidaban y las ocupaban para sus huéspedes "favoritos". Room service tenía un costo de $20.00, hace años que no escuchaba eso en un hotel todo incluído, pero así es allí. Restaurante a la carta para una estadía de 5 días nos ofrecían solo 2, pero si buscabas por tu cuenta que fue lo que hicimos conseguíamos más. En fin, lo que salvó la estadía fue los "tours" ofrecidos por Roberto y su compañía Robert transportation and tour. Excelente servicio!

Beware of the concierge’s, especially Wellington, they are just timeshare salesmen. Wellington lied to us about everything. For example he could not even get us a drink and lunch at Legends Sports Bar. We sat there for an hour and left because our food never came. Don’t fall for the tour, it’s seriously a timeshare sales pitch. Our phone didn’t work so we couldn’t order room service. Good thing because there is a $20 delivery charge. We reported the phone not working twice and it never got fixed. Read the small print on everything. The room descriptions are deceiving, the mini bar is only soda and water, nothing else. The upgraded dining in the restaurants are pretty good but you can only eat dinner there three times in a week. The buffet is nothing to brag about but it’s available and has a few good items to eat. Don’t take the hotel transportation. Some people had a 2 hour trip from the airport in a bus full of people drinking beer and having to stop and pee. The swim up pool in our room was pretty amazing!

The place was very clean, my favorite was the entertainment people, aside from that the restaurant reservation were a little pointless because they never had. You have to wake up super early to get a chair by the pool. The staff service was very delayed. The prices for sunscreen and other items were outrageous so bring your own. The buffet food was very decent, the drinks were also decent and the ambience was nice.

We check in the hotel and first think we see is Doo doo stains in the bathroom, broken AC and stains everywhere. We till the front desk and they give us a diffrent room that still has doo doo stians but a working AC so we keep it. The food is horrible, they have resturants you need to make reservations weeks in advance. This is not a 5 star resort. more like 3 and 3 is pushing it

It was a nice place to visit. I do have a concern that is about the pool area. They need more lounge chairs available. It was almost impossible to find a chair. The sand area by the ocean was the same. If not for this I would have rated excellent.

We had a great stay at the Senator! Beach was beautiful. Staff was friendly. Drinks were delicious. The restaurants were very good overall. Reservations were a little confusing though. Buffett was decent. Wish there was more variety from day to day but always found something to eat. The price was def a bargain! Rooms were very clean and well maintained. Bathrooms could use some updating but no issues. Our stay was amazing and can’t wait to go back!!!

The resort was absolutely beautiful, beaches were clean, sightseeing was gorgeous. Weather was perfect. The staff were kind and always helpful, I loved watching the friendship And camaraderie between them all. The food was fresh with plenty of options. The restaurants; Italian, steakhouse (my favorite), Japanese, sushi, and an amazing Buffet restaurant were all tasty. As indicated on other reviews from others, chairs were a problem at the pool. We had a swim out, so after two days of chasing chairs, we stayed away from the area during the day, and hung out at the swim out which was perfect for us. Would definitely go back.

We stayed 7 nights at The Senator and enjoyed every single day. It was beautiful, clean, always had hot water, staff was wonderful and attentive, the sunsets were beautiful. It was also fun to see the huge cruise ships sail into Amber Cove. However, there is a problem with the beach chairs. People go fishing down around 6am and put towels on chairs so as to reserve them. This is for the pool and the beach. It is supposedly not allowed, but is still done. Some people didn’t come down until the afternoon, leaving others without chairs. Now, I’m of the kind that, you’re not here, then I’m using that chair. It’s my vacation too! I made sure to give it back when the people eventually came down, but it is a major inconvenience. Also, this resort shares the beach and bars with Playabachata next door. Which is kinda nice. The area is very safe, but there’s not a lot going on. There are shows at night, but not until 9:30pm. There are no bikes, but playabachata has some water sports. The beach is lovely, and the water is glorious, but not super clear. Not when we were there anyways. I noticed an older crowd and no one was super partying. For us, it was lovely, but certainly not for everyone. Be aware of you fly into Santiago and not POP, you will have to take a cab for 1.5 hours at a cost of $75USD. we talked the cabbie down from $90. Expedia set all of this up, and we were very surprised when we landed and learned we had to pay more and drive a long way to get to Puerto Plata.

If you want to book the standard room, you are better off booking with PlayaBachata Nextdoor as they are the same with food offered and accommodations. However if you want to book the suites, book with the senator as their suites are very nicely appointed.

Rooms are very outdated. Our room had broken soap and lotion and shampoo and body wash dispenser by the sink and in the tub. The tub had mold. The toilet had rust. It was very old room and could use a lot of work. Was able to get reservations to all the restaurants, not the best but it’s fine for the price. Don’t get seating outdoors unless you don’t mind waiting over an hour to be served. We had to walk out of the Italian restaurant because we weren’t even acknowledged by anyone for over 25 minutes of seating. Buffet has the same food for lunch and dinner daily. No changes at all. You get tired of eating the same food everyday multiple times a day. Activities were fun. The activities team is what kept everything together and going for us.

My friend and I stayed in a Junior King room for 5 days and everything in the room was great however we did get food poisoning from the buffet and making reservations for the a la carte restaurants is extremely difficult as the staff does not provide any insight upon checking in and you probably won’t get a reservation for at least 3 days in advance. The wifi isn’t great and when we needed assistance the front desk hung up on us without saying a word. When we called back to repeat our request they simply said they had heard us the first time. Overall this resort was average but definitely not 5 stars worthy.
