““Net als in de film, ik wil het, net als in de film…” In de jaren tachtig zong popgroep Toontje Lager deze woorden. Wanneer ik door Abu Dhabi reis, schiet ongemerkt deze songtekst door mijn hoofd. De hoofdstad van de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten was de afgelopen jaren immers het decor van een reeks aan<\/strong> blockbusters<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

### Ruimtevaartuig tussen de kamelen<\/p>\n

In 2015 strijkt het circus genaamd Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens<\/em> neer in de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten. De sciencefictionfilm, waar de gehele wereld reikhalzend naar uitkijkt, wordt grotendeels opgenomen in Dubai. Voor Abu Dhabi is echter ook een rol weggelegd. De extravagante filmset<\/strong> plaatst te midden van de woestijn ruimtevaartuigen en torenhoge gebouwen. Een natuurgetrouwe markt ontbreekt niet in het geheel. Herken jij het fragment?<\/p>\n

### Stilte voor de storm<\/p>\n

Het luxueuze Emirates Palace Hotel is sowieso geen straf om te verblijven. Het wordt nog leuker wanneer je je bedenkt dat de crew van<\/strong> Furious 7<\/strong>, de 7e film in de reeks The Fast and Furious<\/em> op deze plek verbleef. In de film zie je ‘Dom’ en zijn crew hier chillen, alvorens ze hun queeste beginnen, op zoek naar God’s Eye.<\/p>\n

### Saoedi-Arabi\u00eb?<\/p>\n

Ondanks dat de film The Kingdom<\/em> grotendeels in Amerika is opgenomen, streek de crew voor een paar weken neer in Abu Dhabi. De film is ge\u00efnspireerd door de aanslagen in Riyadh van 12 mei 2003. Filmen in Saoedi-Arabi\u00eb is geen optie, maar opnamen maken in de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten is geen enkel probleem. Je bekijkt Abu Dhabi toch net even anders in de wetenschap dat Jamie Foxx<\/strong> hier ook rondliep.<\/p>\n

### Adembenemend spectaculair<\/p>\n

Met haar 5 prachtige torens die schitteren in de immer aanwezige zonneschijn, is Etihad Towers een weerspiegeling van alles wat Abu Dhabi is en zal zijn: modern. De karakters Dom en Brian racen er in Furious 7<\/em> een fantastische race. Wanneer ik vanuit mijn hotelkamer naar beneden kijk, snap ik direct waarom de Etihad Towers de meest iconische locatie uit de film<\/strong> werd. Adembenemend spectaculair.<\/p>\n

### Net echt<\/p>\n

Een ritje op een kameel door de woestijn, een karaokeavond, relaxen in een weldadige spa. Sarah Jessica Parker en haar filmvriendinnen reizen in de film Sex and the City 2<\/em> naar Abu Dhabi. In de bruisende sequel genieten de dames van een plek vol mysterie<\/strong>. Prachtig! Helaas vonden de eigenlijke opnames plaats in Marokko nadat het script door de autoriteiten in Abu Dhabi werd afgekeurd. Maar wanneer ik door de souk dwaal, waan ik mezelf toch even Carrie Bradshaw.<\/p>\n
