Discover the Highlights of the West Algarve. Start your journey in Silves, the ancient Moorish capital of the Algarve. Visit the impressive Silves Castle, the finest military monument from Portugal’s Islamic period, and immerse yourself in the town’s rich history.

Pass by Monchique village on your way to Fóia, the highest point in the Algarve at 902 metres above sea level. On a clear day, enjoy views of the coastline stretching from Portimão to Cape St. Vincent.

Next, head to Lagos, a historic city with roots dating back to 2000 BC. Once a Celtic settlement called Lacobriga, it later became an important port for Phoenicians and Romans. In the 15th century, Lagos played a key role in the Portuguese Age of Discoveries.

Take some free time to explore the old town. Visit the Governor’s Castle, see the statue of Prince Henry, and learn about the Slave Market, one of the first in Europe. Don’t miss the statue of young King Sebastian and the beautifully decorated Church of St. Anthony, known as the Golden Church.
