Lovely cabin!!
The cabin is exactly as in the pictures. It's wonderful: very cozy, well-equipped, extremely clean, it's got all modern comforts, and it is in a beautiful setting. The heating was on when I arrived, so that was a nice surprise. It was very quiet and close to some easy hiking trails. There is also a lovely area outside with a fire pit, and it is ideal for BBQ weather permitting. Two pieces of advice: take groceries/drinking water with you as it is quite remote (which is what is great about it!), and don't drink too much after 7:00 pm, as you need to go out to go to the bathroom (It is mentioned on the listing, though.) Other than that, Jane is a great host and responds immediately to your texts. I definitely recommend and hope to go back soon. Nik

Boys Hunting Adventure
Staying here has turned into a tradition for us. It is a great intimate little space where we have been able to enjoy the outdoors during the day and came back to tell hunting stories at night.

This was the beginning of our 50th wedding anniversary celebration. Could not have asked for nicer hosts. Property was so much greater than expected. Beautifully decorated and super clean. Best setting ever. Looking forward to our next visit! Highly recommend!!

Everything was great but the only thing I would change is the stone walkway to the bathroom and shower house. In the middle of the night when needed to go to the bathroom it was hard not to trip but I would recommend this place to everyone

Anniversary trip
We absolutely loved it at thornwood cottage. It was a beautiful location and there's so much to do in the area. Jane and John are great and super helpful. I'd stay here again in a second! Highly recommend staying here.

The cabin was perfect for what I needed- a nice place to hang out in proximity to both the river and Nordic Fest in Decorah. I enjoyed it thoroughly, including there being a few little touches I wasn't expecting. Just FYI, the front left leg of the barstool closest to the door needs a bit of glue in at least the top joint.

Funtastic Iowa Family Vacation
We had the best time in the house. It was perfect, providing enough bedrooms AND bathrooms! The kitchen was well stock with two refrigerators, dishes and cooking utensils. The deck was heavenly, and the view was spectacular. My three young grandchildren loved the the thrid floor, with the bedrooms and games. The house was everything advertized and more, it provided for a great family get away that was close to many things to do in Iowa.

Quiet, beautiful & comfortable
I had a very relaxing & restful long weekend at this cozy cabin in the middle of the most gorgeous tree covered bluffs! The cabin had all of the amenities you need to eat, sleep & rewind. The bathroom is the only hitch in the giddy-up: be prepared to have to walk outside to access the bathroom (toilet, shower, double sink). It’s about 75 feet from the door of the cabin to the door of the bathroom (located in the large home next door), but it’s up a stair or two and across a beautiful but uneven stone path - I say all this because I’m a woman of a certain age (58 yrs young) who gets up at least once in the night to use the toilet, and navigating the step(s) and stones while sleepy was a minor challenge. As long as you’re prepared and ok with that, it is a wonderful place to stay!!

Gorgeous property and wonderful hosts
This is a little gem of a cabin where I went to write and relax. I took a long hikes during the day and wrote at night and found the setting to be absolutely perfect. John and Jane are kind and wonderful. The cabin has everything I needed and more. And the surrounding area is absolutely beautiful, quiet and inspiring. I will be back!!!

Best Mother's Day Vacation Ever!
This was my second time back to this amazing cabin, and my daughter's (8 year old) first time. I enjoyed my stay just as much as I did the first time last fall and my daughter absolutely adored this little slice of heaven. It was neat experiencing this location in the spring (we are from central Iowa). The cabin was very clean, fully supplied, the decor is just perfect for us, the loft style is so fun, it is nice having Alexa and the streaming services on the TV, the fire pit was my daughter's favorite, and it was so nice having a deck and grill. This cabin is our new home away from home. The owners are so incredibly friendly and kind. I can't wait to bring my daughter back again as I have no doubt coming to this cabin has now become a very special tradition for us.

Perfect!
My wife and I love this place. We've stayed here multiple times. It is cozy and comfortable and has everything you need. The bathroom is in the other house as to listing says, but that bathroom is nicer than our bathroom at home! If you have mobility issues, you may have trouble getting up to the loft because the stairs are narrow. Other than that, I highly recommend this place!

Cozy Cabin
We had a wedding in a near by town and rather than staying in the suggested hotel, we turned to our VRBO app. My husband and I rented the cozy cabin for two nights. The check in process was smooth and it was easy to find the property. The cabin was clean and had everything we needed. The cabin has a full kitchen so we were able to sleep in and make breakfast at the cabin. We did visit many near by towns for antiquing, hiking, and food. We did not need to contact the owners, but when reviewing the guest and suggestion book, the owners are quick to make changes based on suggestions and value their guest. This cabin is the perfect location for a long weekend getaway.

This property is in the best location,15 or 30 minutes from a dozen sightseeing locations. Beautiful and private property with wildlife all around us (mama deer and her twins visited every day).Property owners so helpful with suggestions for the many activities and eating establishments in the area, even checking in our first morning to make sure we had everything. I am looking forward to our next visit and stay at this same location.

We had the best visit at the Thornwood Cottage! The owners were extremely nice and accommodating. The cottage was cute and had everything we needed. From ac to heat, easy open windows, comfortable outdoor chairs, all the tools for cooking or cleaning & the newly remodeled bathroom close by - this place was ideal. Near my favorite hiking places, Yellow River State Forest, Effigy Mounds National Monument, the beauty of the Mississippi- great dwelling & location. Also the owners were patient & prepared. The driveway deviled a small ditch after a storm & they showed up soon after & repaired the damage. I will be back

Peaceful Cabin
The property is beautiful and quiet. The fire area is just a short walk from the cabin. Although we didn't use it, everything was well stocked. I loved the book with other renter's ideas of places to see. Very quick response time from the owner when I had a question. Overall a great place to rent. Lots of things to do in Lansing and other neighboring towns.

Fun getaway
My wife and I rented the loft cabin and our friend and her family rented the main house. The kids ages 3-14 loved the house! They had so much fun enjoying all the rooms and space. We loved the outdoor area where the kids had room to run off energy in a safe environment. Jane thought of everything that we forgot and more! Will definitely be making this an annual event.

Perfect for a long weekend!!
My wife and I stayed here four nights, and it was absolutely perfect! Close enough to Lansing and the river, and we were able to do several day trips throughout the area. The bed in the loft was very comfortable, and the place had everything we needed for a nice getaway. I wouldn't change a thing. We've already made reservations for another visit in a couple of months. Yes, the bathroom is in the big house, but it's very close to the small cabin and it's not inconvenient at all to have to walk over there. The bathroom itself is very spacious and has a very nice shower. I wouldn't let the fact that the bathroom is a few steps away stop you from renting this perfect cabin outside of town.
