We got room 5 at the front of the accommodation block facing the carpark. The general look of it was awful - grim black paintwork and concrete.
The room smelled foul and there were deeply embedded dog hairs around both beds. We refused the room, and were moved to ground floor room 14 at the rear of the block. There were empty beer cans lined up on the doorstep of neighbouring rooms and the whole presentation of the building looked depressing, unkempt and shabby.
Room 14 was cleaner and did not smell so bad, so we accepted it. On closer inspection there were holes in the bathroom wall, a missing lightbulb, marked bath tub, holes in the curtains, and a huge spider living behind the hair dryer holder.
The key good points - The younger staff member when we arrived was very apologetic and tried her best to help. The meals at supper - pie and chips, was good portion size and cooked to order and we were able to take back to our room to eat.
Breakfast was freshly cooked, with a good choice of items.
Key bad points
Appalling state, and lack of cleanliness of the first room that we turned down.
The grim, dark, old, and depressing building that looks like a rundown motel from the worst of the 70s.
Holes in walls and a general feel of 'is it safe to stay here'.
Our apologies to the staff who are trying hard to do their jobs in a building that is not worthy of their efforts, but we will not be staying here again. The head office needs to do a FULL refurbishment and support their staff.
