The property is perfect for a large group who like a chef's kitchen. It had all the pots, pans, utensils, plates, silverware, condiments, storage containers, trash bags, soaps, etc. that you could want. We had lobster boils twice, and the outside burners and lobster pots were great, as was the 6 burner gas range. For 9 of us though, one fridge was not enough!
But the house is large, charming and comfortable. Everyone liked having their own bathroom/bedroom combo and the A/C in the bedrooms was great. It really is a must, with heat waves becoming the norm. I don't think it would take much to add a couple of units to the main floor and the basement. They were hot, even with opening windows & running fans at night to pull in cooler air.
Now, for the downsides. The weeds & weed-trees have grown up to where the views are limited. I had to hack away some branches along the staircase up from the driveway to use the safety railing. Being close to the road means road noise. And the cleanliness could have been better. Upon arrival, I found the windows and glass doors on the main floor covered with kids' handprints. There were spiderwebs everywhere; the fridge drawers and coffee pot hadn't been cleaned; and there was lots of cooking splatter on the framed pictures that served as a backsplash and walls around the sink and trash areas. (This is why I brought a container of clorox wipes - I'm super-picky that way, so it was cleaner when we left!) The bedspreads, decorative pillows, & slipcovered furniture need to be laundered. The sheets & towels, floors, and bathrooms were all spotless however. (Those Cuddledown sheets are on my Christmas list!) Oh, and none of the doors in the place want to latch, unless you lock them from inside.
Most people probably wouldn't notice these things, or wouldn't care - just know your own cleanliness preferences and act accordingly. To be fair, it is a dog-friendly unit and there was only one cleaning lady; she would need a team of 3 to get a place that big cleaned every week!
But those things really felt minor by the 2nd day - the place oozes charm and we had a great time. It had everything you could want for a great vacation. Movies, puzzles and games for rainy days; even laundry detergent. And Bailey Island is a gem. Cooks and Sundrenched restaurants are delicious and walkable. Kayak rentals, lobster boat charters, and a couple of beaches for the kids made for a memorable vacation. We will definitely be back.
