This property is a doorway to nature's paradise. Being set in jungle with an open living theme there is nothing to not love about Congo bongo. The cry of howler monkeys at 4am followed by the jungle waking up to the evening cry of the toucan nature is all around. The ambience is complimented by the warmth and friendliness of the people who call this place home.

A great jungle stay!
An amazing cabin in the middle of the jungle. All the jungle noises are amazing and you really feel like you’re sleeping amongst it. A lot of wild life around and we saw sloths on the property which was a bonus for us. Direct access to a lovely beach and sea. A perfect stay and would recommend to others.

Best place I have ever stayed
Coco Bongo was one of my favorite places I have EVER stayed in! This place was AMAZING! I loved it so much and was so greatfull for such a welcoming staff. This place was litterly like sleeping in the jungle! You could hear all the jungle noises from your room and you could also hear the monkeys in the morning! It is located a bit far away from other things but nothing more than a bike ride away. The staff was extraordinary and went above and beyond my expectations. As a solo female traveler, this place was absolutely safe. Marisol, one of the workers, also checked up on me to make sure I was ok wich was something I had never experienced at any other place I have stayed. She was absolutely Amazing and very attentive. I will never forget this place. It was absolutely extraordinary and i recomend it to anybody visiting the Manzanillo area.

Absolutely amazing if you want to be in close contact with the jungle. Tucans flying over our head and troops of howler monkeys traveling thru the canopy when we were sitting on the patio, plus much more. 5 minutes walk to the beach. The lady keeping the property was super nice. We stayed in the Big Dream House and one of the bedrooms had parts of the side netting missing and some creature got in during the night and rummaged through my clothes - fun for us but coul be scary for some. Hot water was sketchy at most, wifi good for checking emails but forget uploading pics or anything similar. Overall great experience.

The Congo Bongo was paradise! Loved our house! We saw monkeys, tree frogs, hummingbirds, birds, butterflies and agouti without even leaving the deck. The hammock was a wonderful place to relax and read. Outside shower was awesome. The walk through the forest to the beach was an adventure and the beach was lovely. The howler monkey wake up call was super cool. We also loved the gracious host, all the funky art, and the focus on repurposing and recycling. I would live here!!! Definitely recommend.

Great Jungle Experience
We really enjoyed this place and were glad to have stayed. A couple warnings- it can be noisy when it rains. We had heavy rains the first night, and I got a little overwhelmed by the noise in the bedroom. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper. Second, ALL food must be securely stored in the kitchen cabinets. Even with the latched doors, whatever came to visit still managed to reach thru and grab things. Second time, we had things in tupperware but latch was not secure. It was able to open the door and the tupperware. Just put everything in the fridge. For viewing and experiencing the jungle, there isn't any better.

Congo Bongo the ultimate experience You gotta go!!
If you are looking for a different type of stay Congo Bongo is the place!! The owner /designer went to great detail from an artistic view and the resort is totally awesome. I was a bit nervous about the open environment but it was not an issue. I totally recommend this place and will definitely go back. It was by far the nicest place we stayed at in Costa Rica. Beautiful beach is a 5 minute walk.

Incredible jungle hideaway
Can’t say enough good things about this place. Possibly my favourite place I’ve stayed in the last decade. Gorgeous private wooden cabin with hammock, sofa table and kitchen on the covered porch and a beautiful private bedroom and bathroom with hot showers. Also outside jungle shower for fun! The whole property is beautifully kept and decorated with colourful art made by the husband and wife team that own the place. Short walk through beautiful jungle to the beach and village. Super quiet apart from the sounds of nature. They have a troop of monkeys and several sloths living around the cabins as well as a host of tropical birds. Would have loved to have stayed longer. The village is peaceful - we had breakfast at cocolobo both days whilst sat watching the ocean. The National Park is walkable distance and has by far the most heavenly beach coves in the whole area (and is free!). Bike rental on site, free to borrow beach equipment.

Disappointing accommodation
Good points - wi-fi and fast internet connection and the laundry service. I can think of no others. The Congo Bongo website says all beds are covered with mosquito nets - our 'house' had three bedrooms , only one bed had one. The website also says 'All houses can be locked up' - ours couldn't - only the bedrooms . The kitchen and living area are completely open to the forest. This may sound good but in reality it became very unpleasant after sundown because as soon as you put a light on you're inundated with mosquitos. There were a lot of cockroaches at the property, in the bedroom and each time we open the fridge they would come from underneath and into the fried - we then had to get them out!We had no hot water in the showers at first (one evening and a morning we had to have cold showers) - Daan had it fixed after I reported it but one of the showers worked from a gas cylinder which had run out - couldn't it have been checked before we arrived? The state of electrics worried us - one bedside lamp had a broken switch with bare wires - the electric shower had taped twisted wires above the showerhead. We didn't see much wildlife in the grounds - Agoutis and Spider monkeys. We saw more walking to the village - a 20 minute walk away. Cool & calm Cafe probably the best of a bad bunch of places to eat - the owners brother Omah is a great wildlife guide.. Mostly we walked to El Refugio and got a taxi back - reasonable food but quite expensive.

Hi David, When creating Congo Bongo Ecolodges, I knew that we could not be all things to all people, so I decided to create a space especially for nature lovers who come to Costa Rica looking for the chance to stay in the jungle yet be near the beach at the same time. We try to portray this idea as clearly as possible on our website with the photos (all of which show open spaces) and descriptions. And while we are located inside a wildlife refuge, we do not have control over which animals appear to you. You did forgot to mention the sloth that my wife pointed out to you. The ecolodge that you chose, the River Dream House, has three bedrooms (with three showers to choose from), two of which are totally enclosed with glass windows and air conditioning, hence the lack of mosquito nets. There are some simple rules to follow like keeping the doors closed and keeping the kitchen clean which can help minimize insects. We do appreciate you bringing to our attention the issues with the lamp and the shower, both which were fixed right away. Overall, it sounds like our property was not a good fit for you, and maybe even the area in general as you did not seem to be happy with the restaurants either. We loved Congo Bongo!
Great service, beautiful location, gorgeous property and houses. Free laundry service. Well appointed kitchen and setup for home cooking and grilling. Free beach gear like surfboards, toys, and more. Great onsite recycling and compost program. Excellent mosquito nets over each bed. So much wildlife to enjoy from bed, porch, or hammock. Easy walk to beach. Close to manzanillo town for food, hikes and snorkeling. Bikes available to rent from property for $10/day. Many bikeable locations for food, beaches, and more. Pricey for our budget but well worth it! Wish we could have stayed longer than two nights!

Ein bisschen wie Camping
Wir waren für 5 Nächte im Long Dream House. Das Haus ist sehr groß und hat verschiedene Sitzmöglichkeiten und auch Hängematten. Wir waren im Juli da, es hat sehr viel geregnet. Dadurch, dass sich über dem Haus ein Blechdach befindet, ist es bei Regen im Haus sehr laut, teilweise so dass man sich die Ohren zuhalten muss. Unterhalten ist nicht möglich. Mit Dschungelgeräuschen hatten wir gerechnet aber nicht mit diesem Lärm durch Regen! Die Zimmer und das Bad sind geschlossen. Das Personal machte nur die zugänglichen Bereiche sauber, die Schlafzimmer und das Bad nur nach besonderer Aufforderung. Dummerweise haben wir da zu lange gewartet und so waren die Zimmer und das Bad schon etwas unappetitlich. Da es in Costa Rica um 18:00 Uhr dunkel wird und das Haus offen ist, konnten wir abends gar nicht mehr draußen sitzen, wenn wir nicht von Mücken aufgefressen werden wollten. Hier blieb nur die Flucht unters Moskitonetz. Auf die Benutzung die Küche haben wir weitgehend verzichtet, da ein ständiger Ameisenstrom uns den Appetit gründlich vermieste. Sorry, wir haben ein bisschen eine Krabbeltier - Stechtier - Paranoia entwickelt. Der Strand!! Der Weg zum Strand ist etwa 10 Minuten lang und gut zu gehen. Der Strand ist atemberaubend schön. Meistens waren wir ganz allein da. Es ist ein reiner Sandstrand und es gab meistens große Wellen, die uns viel Spaß gemacht haben. Man kann sich Strandspielzeug mitnehmen und die errichteten Schattenplätze nutzen.

I am so sorry you didn't have the best experience at Congo Bongo Ecolodges. I want to respond to some of your issues for the benefit of readers considering a stay at Congo Bongo Ecolodges. Coming to Costa Rica one certainly has to expect the possibility of heavy rain at times, it is located in the jungle. I am sorry you thought it was too loud on the roof, but that is a typical roof in this area. Mosquitos, too, are something I would expect visitors to prepare for. Most travelers find using insect repellant solves the problem. Also, visiting in the dryer seasons you will find very fewer mosquitoes. At Congo Bongo, we pride ourselves in keeping your rental clean. As you say, the accessible areas were cleaned. All it requires for the bedroom and bathroom is a request. We respect the clients privacy and will not go in these areas without permission. We make this known upon check in. Again, this is the jungle so ants can show up in the house. We strongly advise clients to keep food out of the bedrooms that can attract them. We are very happy you did enjoy the beach and it seems overall you did enjoy your adventure. At Congo Bongo we strive to offer a top-notch jungle experience with custom care to your comfort. Unfortunately, some people are not prepared for be so close to nature. We hope perspective clients will carefully read about the area and our houses, as we want them to have a once in a lifetime experience. This all being said, I feel I need to take issue with the three stars you gave us. Based on the comments it seems you did enjoy your time at Congo Bongo Ecolodges. Unfortunately, I think future clients seeing 3 stars would think you had poor service. Again, let me say that everyone at Congo Bongo works tirelessly to make sure every client has a wonderful experience. Sadly, we can not control the weather or the bugs here in the jungle.

A perfect 10!
I can't say enough good things about this accommodation. They lodges are absolutely stunning - located in the middle of a beautiful jungle. Falling asleep listening to the howler monkeys is unlike anything else we've ever experienced. Its a short 5 minute walk to the beautiful beach, that we usually had entirely to ourselves! The staff - everybody, including the owner and his wife, were so kind and made us feel really at home and supported for our entire stay. They even provide free daily laundry service. The kitchens were well stocked which made it easy to cook meals. They had beach toys and chairs, and also some nice bikes (even some kids bikes). We stayed in 4 different accommodations during out 2 weeks in Costa Rica, one of which was a 5 star resort, and this was hands down our favorite place!

Magical rainforest cabin
The place is out of this world. Magical and Beautiful property in a private setting. A bottle of wine waiting for you monkeys and toucans everywhere all around you all day and beach access and location could not be better. Went with my children and am sure they will never forget and I can't wait to return. Had everything but Wish there was a toaster though. Kids wanted toast and I tried to make in a pan and got distracted by so many monkeys everywhere, burnt the toast and stunk up the place. Sorry Dann. By the way the owner Dann was wonderful and very helpful with everything. Can't wait to return.

Beautiful Place!!
Fantastic location! Beautiful garden-like surroundings. We followed a troop of Howler monkeys move through the trees as we walked back from the deserted beach.

Nice hotel if you like nature
Overall house its prety and its surrounded by nature and close to the beach with a nice location between manzanillo and punta uva. I only have 2 cons: 1. every night raccons get in the kitchen that its outdors and if you left something they will eat it 2. Bathrooms are inside the rooms with no walls to divide the toilete from the bed
