Located in a very central area, just one minute from the historic center and 7 minutes from the beautiful beaches of the west coast of the Sulcis Iglesiente region, you can visit Sa Punta de S’Arena, known for its almost golden sand and crystal-clear water.
The most famous beach in Iglesias is Masua Beach, home to Sardinia’s most spectacular natural monument: the Pan di Zucchero. Like a lump of sugar, this light-colored rock floats in the blue-green waters of Masua, offering a breathtaking sunset and recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Other must-see beaches in the Iglesias area include Porto Paglia (part of the municipality of Gonnesa) and Cala Domestica, a delightful cove sheltered from the wind by towering white limestone cliffs, Mediterranean vegetation, and small dunes. The shallow waters and crystal-clear sea make Cala Domestica the ideal spot for snorkeling. The landscape is further enhanced by a Spanish tower and the remains of the miners who once built storage facilities and dug tunnels there. Masua, Porto Paglia, and Cala Domestica are part of the wild beaches of the Costa Verde.

The main beaches are accessible by car—just a 7-minute drive—or by bus, with the terminal right in Piazza Sella.

Among the many attractions, the celebration of Holy Week rituals in the traditional Spanish style—with its rich colors and forms—stands out. The processions of the Mysteries on Holy Tuesday and Good Friday are the most evocative events. Among the churches, the Cathedral of Santa Chiara (13th century), the Church of Our Lady of Graces, the College Church—the Jesuits’ “temple”—and the Church of St. Francis, one of Sardinia’s best-preserved and most significant examples of Catalan Gothic architecture, which houses an altarpiece from 1560. Also worth noting are the ruins of San Salvatore, one of the few Byzantine cruciform buildings (9th–11th centuries). The Santa Barbara Mining Trail begins in Iglesias: 400 kilometers in 24 stages, to be covered on foot or by mountain bike, exploring the history and religious devotion of the Sulcis region. Another tradition worth experiencing is the medieval historical parade in mid-August, featuring musicians, flag-wavers, and reenactors in medieval costumes from the historic neighborhoods.
For over a century, until well into the mid-20th century, the mines were the source of wealth for the Iglesiente region. Today, they form part of the industrial heritage of the Sardinian Geomining Park, recognized by UNESCO. The Museum of Mining Art, housed in the “Asproni” Institute—an early 20th-century Art Nouveau building—and the Museum of Machinery trace the evolution of mining through a collection of minerals, models, reconstructions of mining environments, and an exhibition of original machinery. To get an “inside look” at the mines, you can take guided tours of the fascinating Monteponi—one of Italy’s most important mining complexes—in Nebida, exploring shafts, tunnels, piers, and miners’ houses (home to 3,000 people in 1910, now a ghost town), including the Lamarmora ore-processing plant (1897), in Masua and Porto Flavia—a futuristic and revolutionary structure that allowed for the direct loading of minerals, a port suspended halfway up a rock face, from which a 600-meter tunnel extends, overlooking the sea.


After exploring the coast, you’ll discover the delights of the local cuisine: from tuna to potato and mint ravioli, all the way to almond-based desserts that are a feast for the eyes and a treat for the palate.
