Very traditional cottage in an excellent location.
The cottage is very basic but has everything you need for a comfortable stay and it is on the waterfront so we could kayak fro the front door.

Amazing location in traditional Hebridean black house
Located in a fantastic location, the property affords amazing views, with wildlife, especially sea birds all around. Very quiet surroundings. The property is adequately equipped and has a wood burner in the lounge, which was a lovely feature. Berneray is a great location with easy access to North Uist across the causeway or over to Harris on the ferry.

Fabulous location
Situation on the shore provided amazing views. Lots of wildlife and a dream for bird watching. We were privileged to witness an arial display from a short eared owl hunting at our doorstep.

Wonderful holiday
Clean and comfortable and fastastic location to get away from the rat race. No WiFi and limited mobile coverage - just relax and enjoy the island and its fantastic beaches. Masses of bird-life. Only one seal as they and the otters are away breeding just now. An electric fan heater would be a welcome addition as fuel is not easy to source for the multi-fuel fire.

Relaxing place.
Back again and still amazed at the beauty of the location of this beautiful "black house" full of history past. Great area to relax and watch the wildlife from birds to seal's. Beautiful beaches to walk along. Small local shop. If you enjoy the peace and quiet and don't mind the unpredictable weather this is ideal. Was nice meeting Mark and Audrey very friendly and helpful couple with lots of local history and input, they made us feel very welcome. Will return in a different season.

Cozy cottage which let's your imagination go wild
Wonderful wee home. Well equipped kitchen. Fab fire (though Ash tray needs replaced as rotten right through). Comfy bed. A place where you reflect on generations before you, the people who lived in blackhouses. Smashing views. People mentioned cleanliness being issue, and we agree. Storage... my wife would have liked a bedside cabinet with drawers, as storage is minimal especially when you have a week of winter wooly jumpers. The other set of drawers whilst in keeping with the theme of house are not easy to open, had dead flies and left clothes smelling. Time to reflect on bedroom furniture we think.perhaps a wardrobe with storage.. The lock on front door is temperamental and has obviously been an issue before. This is a smashing holiday let which just needs a bit of tlc. We loved staying there. Being where it is situated and having a thatched roof we expect wee beasties eg spiders flies things like that, but we felt warm, safe and lucky to have experienced such a lovely and different kind of accommodation. Loved no TV and no WiFi...a real detox...though with the weather as bad as it was and ferry crossings being rescheduled etc we would have benefitted from wifi. If we had WiFi our northern lights app would have alerted us to activity which we Sadly missed. If you are lucky enough to stay here, go outside when it's pitch black and be amazed by the stars. Awesome. An amazing place to explore nature. Hope to return.

great experience in a black house
Great location, next to the beech and easy walking distance to east beach. Slightly difficult to find as house sign doesn't stand out against the weelie bin enclosure. Might be worth mentioning that the house sign is fixed on wheelie bin enclosure. House was clean and warm with electric fan radiators. seating comfortable and great views from window where you eat. Mark the owner was there and helpful with suggestions. could do with more detailed instructions on the use of the property, although it was easy to work out what needed to be done. Great bay to stay in so we saw seals from the property and porpoises and otter in the bay. Well worth staying here.

What a magical place!
Lovely to stay in a renovated black house, in a stunning spot. It was cosy and had all you needed. The island and its beaches and wildlife are stunning and untouched. We had a great time as did our collie Isla.

Fabulous charming, historic black house
We stayed in this beautiful cottage for 1 week and enjoyed every minute of it! The views are stunning and there are great beaches, walks and an abundance of wildlife. We were well looked after by Ann and Bill and Mark the owner was excellent at communicating with us. Not having the internet and TV allowed us to reconnect with each other, as well as the environment. We didn’t want to come home and will definitely be back!

Black House
The location of this property is unique and stunning unfortunately the condition in which it was presented to us, was extremely poor. Given that hospitality has just had a lockdown period following COVID it would be expected that the property would have been deep cleaned. Disappointingly this was not the case. The bed (on the divan drawers) was stained with insect droppings and dead insects (wood lice) littered one of the drawers. The bathroom ceiling was covered in cobwebs from wall to wall. The kitchen cutlery and utensils needed thoroughly cleaned due to dried egg yolk found on one of the knives. Encrusted egg also found on the spatula and along the edge of one of the chopping boards. It was a terrible start to our stay but once we got the place into a satisfactory (I stress, only satisfactory. The under-bedding needing re-laundered) condition, we went on to enjoy a fantastic week on Breneray and Nth Uist.

Wonderful week, lovely location.
The cottage is very beautiful and in an amazing location. It is simply surrounded by wildlife! Snipe winnowing, Geese, Ducks, Gulls, seals and even a nest of wrens fledging 1 metre outside the window in an adjacent stone wall. Just a couple of things that would improve the experience from our point of view...... Now that we are in high summer (daylight from 0330 until 2300), blackout curtains would be helpful in the bedroom. We were grateful for the lack of TV (fitted in with our relaxation & wildlife viewing), we felt that the property would benefit from some kind of Internet connectivity (no mobile coverage in the cottage) to help with researching local history, wildlife, etc, and especially in these crazy Covid times, the ability to check different places opening hours, etc, as it is very hit & miss from place to place. There are few other options as the Berneray visitor centre is closed due to Covid, so do your research before beginning your trip or your options will be quite restricted when in the cottage.

Great retreat
We had a lovely week despite the cool weather! Loved the location and rustic feel of the cottage. The local shop delivered our groceries and do a great pizza! Great walks on local beaches and cosy fire. We hope to return one day!

Children of the Black Houses
We had a couple of hiccups getting started but this property gets 5 stars overall. The GPS showed the location out in the middle of the sea. We could NOT find it! We stopped at the little local store and they were so kind to drive with us down to the property. Mention Mark's name. It is exactly 1.5 miles from the Berneray Store and Bistro. It is beyond the Coral Shop and seal watch. It is on the right hand side of the road beyond a gate. The cottage is amazing. The kitchen is very well stocked (I am a professional chef) for prepping and cooking meals. Lovely dishes that mirror the colors of the kelp and the sea are ready for whatever delicacies you create. There is a primitive feel that I am certain is intentional from the owners. I read that they carefully decided not to provide a television...good choice. In this place, you load the log burner with peat, curl up by the fire and renew your spirit. A place to be still. A place to connect to nature. There is a bath tub/shower that never ran out of hot water. We were unfamiliar with the type of washing machine and got a good laugh after struggling with it to find detailed directions sitting on top of the machine. :). The bed is huge, firm, and we slept like babies. I found hot water bottles in the cupboard and every night filled them with hot water and tucked them between the covers at the foot of the bed. What a treat to slide in to a warm toasty bed on a chilly Fall evening. I had such fun doing that. The location is worth a million dollars. The pristine beauty is breath taking. The still quiet is like medicine! One day my husband spent 1/2 the day traveling to the other side of the island to secure a new tire to repair the blow out on our rental car. I wondered what I would do, alone, all morning. I was certain boredom would take over and I'd be miserable. But I stoked the fire, made a cuppa, and wrapped up in a North Uist woolen blanket on the comfortable sofa and read "Children of the Black Houses". I will never be the same. It is the moving documentary of the people that lived in the very same type of house I was in. Their victories, failures, joys, and sorrows. It was a wakeup call that a flat tire or poor internet service are NOTHING. These people...well...read the book. It is on the top of the little book shelf on the wall. This was the highlight of our 3 weeks in Scotland. It beat out the "Witchery by the Castle" in Edinburgh!!!!

Totally relaxed and refreshed. A well equipped and appointed cottage. Fantastic location with views over the bay. Lots of wildlife on show. Berneray provided my wife and I with the opportunity to unwind and relax from our busy lifestyle. Already planning to book for next year. The view of West Beach for the first time will live long in the memory. Walking anywhere on the Island provides a different view around every corner. Lovely memories to take home from a very special place.

Our week in this cottage was excellent. The cottage was clean, comfortable and well-equipped. We shared our location with an owl and families of geese with their goslings. The views were wonderful and we loved walking to the beach in the afternoons.

Stunning Blackhouse in Berneray
Just returned from a week long stay in this tastefully restored Blackhouse in a stunning location. Very comfortable cottage equipped with all you need. Lovely views with your private bay, sitting outside watching the cormorants and seals. Lovely local walks and of course, the spectacular West. Beach. The ideal stress free location and we will be back. Thank you

Super location, simple but lovely little home
Of course, we love Berneray, and the location of this property was right by the shore; lovely way to chill, and take time out away from our normal busy lives. We loved just looking out of the living room window and watching the local otter. Loved reading about St Kilda, and some of the local characters (would have liked bird/machair/seashore identification books too). Loved the wooden flooring and 'rustic' carpentry of cabinets; also the homely touches, like the 'old-fashioned' radio, kettle and toaster. Cooker very efficient. New settee (?, different from photo) and bed very comfortable. Resident field mouse scuttling in the evening very cute. We got the sense that a lot of thought, pride - and fun - had gone into the renovation of this property. No need to leave the island; plenty to do if you like walking, mooching, reading, bird-watching, etc. The beaches are just stunning. There were some issues which we discussed later with the property owner; he was very quick to respond, and we take his word that he had not been aware of the things we had noted; he was concerned to rectify these straight away so any subsequent holidaymakers should not have the same concerns. All in all, a super destination for anyone wanting to take time out.

Peace and quiet in a truly stunning setting
The house has been well restored and is perfect for two people. The kitchen was well stocked with most things you would need to cook a meal. The wood burning stove was great - once we got the hang of it. The bed was very comfy. The only downside I can see is that storage space in the bedroom was a bit limited. The owners were really helpful and friendly. The setting is ideal for both Berneray and North Uist. There are beautiful beaches and plenty of places to walk on Berneray as there are on North Uist. The wildlife was great and we had a truly wonderful time and were very sad to leave. I hope we will be able to come back one day!

Property very poor but uist a truly beautiful Island
Uist is a beautiful island with very friendly and welcoming people , beaches are absolutely gorgeous with stunning torquise sea but unfortunately our stay at cnoc na dudain was very disappointing and not to be rated at five star . We arrived to find that our wood stove had broken but repaired the following night , two seater sofa not very clean quite smelly and uncomfortable the fridge freezer compartment had mouldy frozen raspberries in it . The superking bed that was advertised as having three single beds put together only had two and unfortunately had an infestation of bed bugs . The washing machine could not be used as it was half full of undrainded water no hair dryer . The access to the property was blocked on two separate days for road and electrical maintenance surely we should have been told about this. On the whole we think the property does not meet what it advertises would certainly return to Berneray but not to this property .
