I'm so glad we earned five stars and am happy Dierk wants to return. As a host, I always appreciate feedback. However, to be clear for other guests who may read his review, I feel I need to respond to his remarks. The wooden deck and stairs are most definitely not green with algae. Our decks and stairs are power washed every spring. However, when it rains...just like any wood surface, it can be a bit slippery. This is why we have multiple signs posted urging guests to use the handrails when it's wet or icy. As for leaves being present, we regularly blow off our decks, stairs and walkways. That said, we do live in a heavily treed area with 150 foot tall oaks and poplar trees surrounding us. When leaves are falling, we can blow the decks off and in an hour they have leaves on them again. As hard as we try, keeping the decks 100% clear of leaves is pretty much an impossible task. It's just part of life here in the mountains. I also would note that Dierk was here in December which is long after most of the leaves had fallen. Other than some residual leaves caught on our roof blowing off onto the stairs, there really weren't many leaves left. So I'm a bit puzzled by this comment. We have ambient lights that surround our stairs and decks. They are controlled by a timer and come on automatically at 5:00 pm (before dark in winter months) and stay on until 1:00 am. which for most guests is ample hours for the need for exterior lights. In addition, we also have a motion sensor light that comes on to help navigate the stairs down to the apartment. It is very dark here at night, and this lighting makes navigating pretty easy for most guests. We also encourage guests in our check-in instructions to have a flashlight handy if night vision is an issue (most cell phones are equipped with one too). I'd like to note that this apartment is located in the lower level of my personal home. We live year-around in the upstairs so I'm very aware of the timing of the lighting as well as the condition of the decks/stairs. Our place is immaculate and well maintained both inside and out. We do not use a 3rd party property manager who may not attend to maintenance properly. If I were a guest reading this review, I might be left wondering if management wasn't doing a good job, so I want to be clear that I am a very hands-on host! Lastly, no blinds in the den...that is correct! The view of the lake from this apartment is gorgeous, and we don't want it obstructed by blinds or curtains. Because we are located at the top of the hills surrounding the lake, no one from outside can see into the apartment. Our apartments share a sixty foot long deck, but are situated at opposite ends. Each apartment has its own outdoor firepit and seating, so there's really no reason why other guests would come walking by this unit. Is it "possible" for someone see inside the den area if they stood on tip toes and peeked? Yes it is. Is it "probable" that anyone would bother trying to do that? No, its not. We've been renting this apartment for over five years, and we've never had a complaint about privacy. For the guests who use the daybed for actual sleeping, we provide sleep masks to help anyone who is light sensitive...and they rarely get used. In 2017 when we first started renting this unit, we actually polled the first couple dozen guests we had about the need/desire for window treatments in the den. The response was overwhelmingly don't cover the windows! So we chose to allow the beauty to come in rather than cover it up! Reviews and guests expectations are a very personal thing, and again, I always appreciate feedback. That said, I hope my input in response to Dierk's feedback clarifies things for anyone taking the time to read. Dierk was easy to host, and we welcome him back anytime.

The overwhelming consensus was that since our place is very private, not obstructing the view is preferable. Also, we do have parking accommodations for an extra vehicle. I'm sorry that you didn't see that information in the binder. We certainly want our guests to know that its fine to have visitors during their stay :-) Hope you'll come back next time you're in our area!

As we explain in our listing, parking for extra vehicles is at a premium because we live on a hilltop in a small residential neighborhood. Thank you for contacting us in advance about bringing your car plus a trailer and a motorcycle so that you knew it would be a challenge before you arrived.
