It is a long drive through the desert to what are said to be the highest sand dunes in the world, there is even a nice hotel nearby.
If you're looking for the real desert ,the Empty Quarters near the Liwa Oasis is for you. Photo taken minutes before sunrise of a lone vehicule travelling the excellent road leading to the highest dune in the area ( at the actual end of that road ) the 287m-high Moreeb Dune .The drive up there passes through the most sublime of sand dunes that are in my opinion best viewed around sunrise and sunset
As an expat living in the "empty quarter" of Abu Dhabi, the dunes of Liwa are a familiar sight - a fact made true given that my commute takes me through them weekly. The unmarked border between the UAE and Saudi Arabia makes up one of the world's largest sand deserts and is home to some of the tallest sand dunes anywhere. Sure, Moreeb Dune is impressive, but the surrounding landscape and feeling of complete isolation is the real reason to take the 2.5 hour drive from Abu Dhabi. Bring water and don't be afraid to get sandy.
A special sunset in the Liwa Desert, on the northern edge of Rub Al’ Khali (The Empty Quarter), the world’s largest uninterrupted sand desert. I climbed a high sand dune and was treated to an extraordinary sight. In the Liwa Desert in Adu Dhabi, UAE. I hiked the desert all the way to the highest point. This woman was in the distance and I could hear her phone snapping pictures because of the natural echo. Her tiny silhouette adds so much to this picture. A reflection of how tiny us humans really are in the grand scheme of things. Anyway I would definitely recommend checking this out. The hotel was so beautiful and had 360 views of the entire desert. The hotel is the Anantara Resort.
