My son lives a few blocks from the hotel so i have been to the area many times. They have cracked down on the number of Air BnB options in the area so other than staying in a room in someone's house, this is the best option. They recently updated some things in the hotel to make it a little nicer. The rooms are clean. Nothing fancy, but they have what you need. There were times when I didn't get in until 1 am but there was always someone at the desk which felt safe.
This is Queens, not Manhatten, so the area is not as fancy or manicured, itnis busy with people who live in the area. This is a real neighborhood area, not a tourist area. I am a 64 year old woman and have traveled there alone and have never felt unsafe. The people are very nice. They are New Yorkers so they keep to themselves, but they are very supportive and nice.
Lots of food options on 30th, just a few blocks away. Easy walk to the subway and you can ride to Time Square, Central Park, Manhattan or any place you want to go. Astoria Park is nearby and very nice. The Ditmar area has a lot of shopping.
