The City of Stara Zagora

Stara Zagora, with a history stretching back to the 7th millennium B.C., has been known by many names, including Beroe, Borui, Irenepolis, and Augusta Traiana. The city is home to some of Europe's best-preserved Neolithic dwellings and the first copper factory on the continent. Founded by Philip II of Macedon, it became a major Roman city under the name Ulpia Augusta Traiana. Though destroyed by the Goths in 250 A.D., it was rebuilt and flourished through the centuries. In the Middle Ages, it was renamed Irenepolis by Irene of Athens and later became known as Borui under Bulgarian rule. Today, Stara Zagora remains a city rich in history and culture.
