Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Sanctuaire. The house itself is beautiful and clean. The beds and furniture were comfortable. The kitchen was stocked and worked for a week long of cooking. Really appreciated the grill (and that they had a back up tank). It was also nice that they supplied some of the necessities like toilet paper, sandwich bags, etc. The sheet thread count and towels were a nice touch. The location was great as it was a remote "get away from it all" feeling in a forest with a nice view of the lake, but 15 minutes from Lake Michigan and town to do things.
Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate for the fire pit and hot tub (it was way too warm), but nothing in anyone's control.
I read in other reviews a lot of criticism about the notes / instructions, but I find that criticism unwarranted. I did not think there were not that many, and all of them were helpful, meant to make your stay easier and keep the house functioning well. Additionally, the owner makes it clear before you book, that you cannot have any additional guests during your stay. If you don't like that rule, then don't stay here. I know other houses may not have the rule, but she clearly communicates it and you agree to it when you sign the contract.
My criticism is around the lake. I didn't realize it would be such a long, steep walk down to the lake. The steps were very steep (even for my tall husband) and there was no railing. Additionally, the lake, even though it said it was a swimming lake, really just seem meant for boating / canoeing / kayaking. The depth, lack of beach and vegetation didn't make it inviting to swim in. My family is spoiled with swimming in Lake Michigan, so I realize that this might not bother others.
It was also a little disappointing that you could not go out on the upstairs balcony. It is understandable given that it causes issues, but think it would be a greater asset if the owner can address it to make it accessible again.
Overall, it was a nice, clean house in a great location.
