Wonderful place for family
We had such a nice trip at Hemlock House and even had family staying at the neighbor house, Holly House! It was so nice to sit out on the porch in the morning and have coffee and listen to the birds. Love love love this house!

Weekend stay
The property was nice, clean, very basic—exactly what we needed. Two issues: the code to check in was sent via email, but did not exist anywhere in our online our reservation on VRBO, in our message history etc., which meant if the email went missing we couldn't check in. That's what happened. And because there's no cell service we had to backtrack for 10 minutes to get enough bars to call the property owner. He was busy at the time we called and didn't pick up until our fifth try. If the code was included into the reservation online this could have been avoided. Also the beds and pillows are pretty old and worn—hard, sagging mattresses and flat lumpy pillows made for an uncomfortable night's rest. Other than that, the place was what we had hoped for.

Autumn Refresh in Bacova with Friends
Pat is the ultimate host. He wants you to lack for nothing. He offers access to two of his properties that are nature lovers’ dreams come true. Barn Hill Trail includes 360° mountain vistas and intimate, lush ancient, fern and rhododendron filled glacier formations next to the glorious, trout-filled Warm Springs Run. As good as the hiking is, bring your bag chairs and picnic lunch to Hal’s Point and spend hours in nature’s grandeur catching up with friends with disturbances only from a deer or two and a mother duck teaching her brood to swim upstream.

Country Cottage
Cottage located in small town, quiet neighborhood. Very clean. Tastefully decorated. Plenty of dishes, pots and pans, dinner wear. Could us a better corkscrew. Wi-Fi is excellent, as is cable tv. Enjoyed long weekend.

Memorial Day Weekend Getaway
We enjoyed a 4 night stay at the Hemlock Cottage in Bacova and had a great time. The group kept busy with all sorts of activities. We fly fished at Hal’s Point, took a walk around Barn Hill and played a couple rounds of golf at the Cascades. Look forward to our return to Bacova.

Great Little Getaway
Great location - about 10 min from Homestead, which was location of wedding we were attending. Had everything we needed. The daffodils were such a treat too! We arrived to the refrigerator not being cleaned out, but after letting Pat know, he called right away to apologize and help get everything fixed. Cleaner came by next morning to apologize as well. We appreciated this communication! We would love to come back and stay again and figure out the beautify trails near by. Thank you Pat for a great stay!

Unfortunately the day we were planning to arrive our daughter became ill with Covid and therefore we did not travel and quarantined. Prior to this, Pat’s communication was excellent and I am confident we would’ve had a wonderful stay. Pat was very understanding and communicated that he would try to work out an alternate date that we could come stay. I am reading all five stars as I have no doubt this will be an excellent stay, however to be clear we did not actually get to take this trip. Hope to be able to visit soon as now everyone as well!

Great location and outdoor amenities
The cottage is smaller than the listing and photos make it seem, especially common areas - the square footage in the listing is probably accurate (1500 square feet). The heating, if you're staying in the winter, was variable around the house - some rooms were hot, some very cold. The inside was rustic, but in good condition in general. The house could have been cleaner when we arrived (e.g., there was a used mask under a bed), but acceptable. The wood stove/fireplace was a huge plus, making the stay comfortable and ambiance even better. The outdoor options were excellent. The owner provided access to his expansive farm and trails, and the west side of Lake Moomaw is a short car ride, quite remote, and spectacular. Great fishing spot. Restaurant options nearby are limited, as are grocery stores, especially off season, so come stocked up.

Great property. Much better than the pictures. The deck is lovely at sunset and we loved having a fire! It was great for our teenagers and dog- everyone could spread out. 18 minutes to Homestead but quick drive to my favorite restaurant- the Waterwheel. Very clean.

We spent a cozy New Year’s at Hemlock cabin. The cabin was extremely clean and comfortable. We loved having easy access to Hot Springs and took several hikes on the trails in Pat’s beautiful property. Already making plans to stay again!

Wonderful Fall Escape!
We enjoyed the walking trail and trout fishing pond that the owner has made accessible. The location was wonderful for meals in Hot Springs and Warm Springs. We especially loved dinner at The Tavern at the Inn. The cottage had everything we needed. Be prepared for a drip coffee maker (we brought K cups). The mattresses and pillows are older and somewhat uncomfortable to us, but our stay was wonderful!

Owner communicated immediately with my inquiries. Love the open concept yet private rooms. Grandkids all caught small fish at nearby bass pond. Kitchen had plenty of dishes, pots, pans, utensils (incl excellent large knives) and trays. Furniture is a little delicate, though, making relaxation somewhat hard for renters. Even outside furnitue had tears in it.

Great getaway
We had a great time at Hemlock cottage. Our host responded quickly to any questions, check in and out was simple and the amenities that go along with the property are awesome! We really enjoyed the fishing ponds and The Barn Hill Loop as well as access to the Jackson River at Hal’s point. If you are looking for a quiet place for your family that is close to fishing and hiking this is your place! The home does allows pets, so something to note if you are sensitive to animals.

Great base for exploration
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Bacova and especially appreciated the wonderful access to the hiking trails and trout stream up the hill. I made a point to walk the trails at least once a day. The house was just right for two adults with 2 teenage kids and the location allowed for hiking and mountain biking at several state parks as well as visiting nearby towns and events.

Beautiful setting
The property is in a beautiful setting. Unfortunately the basement accommodations were unusable due to the musty smell and amount of bugs coming in from the gap in the door both flying and crawling. The sheets were also dirty. The kitchen sink had a significant odor but most likely due to food in the garbage disposal? We noticed too late to check out mouse droppings on the kitchen counter then an actual mouse the morning of checkout 😔 it is understandable in this setting but unsettling To be fair we did not give the host a chance to fix but not sure what could have been done during our stay. Hopefully it will be addressed before the next guest

I live across the street and am very responsive to guests requests. If one reads past reviews it is also clear that the house is kept very clean. I would have liked to seen the actual issues she has pointed out. We would have addressed it immediately. I have also shared this review with our cleaning crew to make sure the area in question will be double checked. I appreciate the feedback and will definitely follow up. Pat Haynes

Such a beautiful area and comfortable house
We love Hemlock Cottage, and the surrounding area. Our adult kids and my husband went for wonderful hikes, watching the sunset on the Barn Hill loop trail, the crazy, gorgeous day lilies. It was a superb decision to rent Pat's cottage and stay a week. We all want to com aback next spring.

Fantastic Family Vacation
Bacova is a quaint town where Pat Haynes generously shares his private property (Barn Hill loop trail & Hal’s Point) to guest of his cottages. My kids loved fishing and playing in the Jackson River. The Hidden Valley hikes to the swinging bridge was one of our favorites. Proximity to everything (hiking, fishing, food) was perfect. The overlook at lake moomaw was worth the climb. Perfect house for family fun. Thankful that we also got to bring the dog along. Can’t say enough good things about our trip to the Bacova & Hot Springs area. We all are looking forward to returning.

This house is great
It is perfect for our countryside retreat. It provides an easy access to all the local landmarks. Supply and decoration are convenient and comfortable. Its own hiking trail is the an astonishing surprise that adds more fun to our trip. Excellent place!

The cottage was remodeled on the inside and all the furnishings were nice. The only issue we had was that tuning into channels on the TV was very complicated, but since we spent most of our time outside and hiking that didn't matter to us.

Fishing, family and tons of fun!
Stayed with 3 children under 5, access to the property and fishing streams & stocked ponds made for the perfect trip! Little ones were introduced to fishing without having to get to far from home and off the crowded trout waters. The wood stove made the place so cozy; we had plenty of room with the three bedrooms upstairs and the basement co sleeping arrangement downstairs.

Fantastic Trout Trip
We had an absolute blast! The house is fantastic and the property is beautiful. Very clean and well stocked, great location. The fishing was great and so many streams right by the house. We walked to a few, drove to a few and had trout for dinner. A great getaway and we will be back. Pat was so nice and accommodating. If you love to fish, this is the place for you.

Great Holiday week with Family
We were looking for a change of weather and scenery for our family. We have 5 kids ages 18-28. This property was located in a beautiful area and the house itself was spacious, clean and comfortable. We stayed 5 nights and cooked in the kitchen all 5 nights. We LOVED the 2.5 mile trail that was located just down the road, the trail brought you through views of moutains, open fields and river/stream. We also visited the Luray Caverns (2.5 hours north) Greenbank observatory 1 hour west, and enjoyed driving around western VA and looking at the beautiful scenery. Patrick was a great host and answered any questions we had. The house had 2 TVS one in living room and one in Master Bedroom with access to streaming services, we signed into our own Netflix, etc. Overall we were very happy with the home and the location. We are back in warm Miami and missing the mountains and weather in Bacova.

Beautiful Trail and Hiking areas
Property was very clean and easy to find. It was a bit of a distance to some of our activities we had planned but the weather was good and it was not a problem. There is a fantastic 2.5 mile loop walking trail near this home that is a must do. It is located a short distance up the street from the front door. The wood stove was great and cozy and much wood was provided. There are one or two small grocery marts within a few miles. We did visit the Milk House Market and it was a beautiful little shop but had very limited items and not as advertised. There was a gym but do to Covid it was understandably closed. The benefit of this area is the landscape and many rivers. If you want to get away and wind down it is a good place to visit.

Don't miss the trail!
Our experience was great with so much beauty in every direction on walks and drives. The house was nicely appointed with just about all we would need. Owner Pat was kind and quick to respond to any questions I had. Really, I mean don't miss the trails there. I only got to see the start of it on the last evening there and wished I could have taken the time to walk the whole thing. It looked amazing. I would definitely rent here again to see what I missed the first time around!
