I have been renting this cottage for 20 years now and this situation ranks right up there as most peculiar. Greg did not contact me via email, phone call, or text until more than 24 hours passed. He then said they had to leave the day prior due to his wife's extreme allergies. I said the house was just cleaned right before their check in, but I could have the cleaner come over again and help rectify any problem. He then told me there wasn't a problem with any surfaces, it was an air allergy. I informed him that it had been raining for 5 days straight, the ground is saturated and the leaves are falling right now, so maybe that is contributing. I offered a nearby lake house to switch to (not that I thought it would matter - same weather there too) but I never heard back. I find it very unusual that I was not contacted immediately upon check in about my "unsafe and filthy" cottage. This review is ludicrous, but I will respond here to their statements anyway. -there is no mold or mice -photos are accurate and updated -cottage has no basement so furnace and breaker box are in foyer -furnaces need air flow so can't be enclosed -furnace has pilot light inside like most do -typical breaker box high on wall with wires that go into ceiling -dock is sturdy and is taken out in fall. It can shift some during season but still sturdy -deck had less than 24 hours of leaves on it. I swept day prior and left corn broom -deck was power washed and stained this summer -stairs are not uneven but are narrow -2 bedrooms upstairs do have a step down Nothing is filthy!! Our wonderful cleaning lady is amazing and spends 4 full hours between groups making sure it is perfect. Same cleaning lady for 20 years. I'm pretty sure something happened with this group's stay that we don't know about. It just doesn't add up.

Just got confirmation from this guest it was a ceiling tile in one room not multiple rooms that needs replacing. It is getting replaced now.. Also the odor is from four new couch pillows I had just purchased the day before their stay. I thought they were nice and didn’t smell them. The covers are removable and zip off so we are washing them now!!! This group was also there prior to our spring cleaning with grout cleaning and carpet/ upholstery cleaning at the end of April…

Oh I’m so happy you had a four star stay overall. I will have to look into the smell- we have had no mold or mildew appear anywhere in the house on any surfaces . All I can think is that it was 88-95 degrees these last two weeks here and super high humidity and maybe that’s why.. I’m definitely looking into it. We do have high end memory foam mattresses just purchase in the last few years except the downstairs bedroom so we can definitely replace that! And there are old style ceiling tiles in the bedroom downstairs (you can see in the photo online where one is offset) that could be replaced. These finger lakes do get seaweed here and there but it’s definitely swimmable and recreational! I guess it’s what you are comfortable with or not. This part of the lake it’s minimal. Dock is fine- we have doctors that rent every year that dock three boats on it with no problem. It’s a typical wooden dock for our area. Thanks for the feedback!

I spoke to this renter on the phone and had contact with her during her week as well. No mention of any of this until they wanted to leave a day early for the holiday weekend. None of this is true - this house has never flooded, there are not ceiling and wall problems, there is NO mold or mildew anywhere, dock is fine, lake is nice for swimming and the cottage is super clean!!

Our next project is the kitchen for sure. We have purchased new furniture/couches for the living room in the last year and all new mattresses in the bedrooms but during the tough times of the pandemic it was impossible to update the kitchen. Our plan is to do it this winter. Not sure what is meant by things being flimsy but we do have antique dressers and tables throughout to keep that cottage vibe. We do let our renters know ahead of time what to bring, but there was a miscommunication here with emails having to be re-sent.

This vacation week was definitely an anomaly. The neighbors in both directions three houses each way complained about the foul language and rowdiness of this group. I haven’t had a complaint in at least five years from my neighbors. Not to mention there were up to 16 people the neighbors said on a few different nights and tons of people coming and going constantly for a small cottage that sleeps 8. A mouse was caught right after their stay- that is true and I do feel bad about that. Unfortunately summer groups can leave an abundance of food laying out. When the roof was replaced the bat-proofing got messed up. It’s all fine now- all sealed up. The wildlife manager also addressed the yellowjackets. This was the week of wildlife I guess. We are going to clean between the windows better. It was hard to cover everything this summer with the extra sanitizing of high touch surfaces, along with regular cleaning. Not much time for extras. And even though our cleaning lady’s mother died before this group, I supervised the substitute cleaner and helped her and she did a great job! It was not “filthy”! I really did have no idea there were bees or bats starting to hang around the soffit outside. They were the first ones to tell me and I got right on it and addressed it during their stay. Someone arrived the next day to address it. Our HVAC man said the furnace is a beast and until it goes, do no not replace it to get central air. So no central air as of now:( We really want everyone to have a great stay here. This cottage was built in 1900 and it’s not going to be perfect....However it is our hope that most guests appreciate the quaintness and rustic feel of our adorable lakefront cottage!

It's too bad we hadn't gotten a call or notification of these things during the stay. We definitely want people to have an enjoyable vacation. The grill is only a year old so if it wasn't working right it is because it is low on propane or a burner needs adjusting. We are around all summer to address these things so we really appreciate if renters let us know asap. We will check out the small appliances - I assume mixers, coffee maker or something else. The window a/c's can freeze up just like any other a/c units if left on 24/7 for weeks on end, so it is good to give breaks. We suggest to run for 8 hours and then give a break for a bit. However, we are looking into central air for this cottage next summer or another window unit in the kitchen. The kitchen seats six even though it is tight. It is small and if the temps are in the 90's consecutive days in a row (which is pretty rare) it would be helpful to have one in the kitchen if we don't get central air. We appreciate the feedback but wish we got it sooner during the stay! We could have quickly addressed the grill, brought a window a/c and other things to make this stay more enjoyable.
