Bergamo is the perfect destination for a city break. To make sure you’re fully prepared, we’ve put together a list of the 10 things you absolutely can’t miss on your itinerary.
1. Take the funicular up to the Upper Town. For 120 years, the funiculars have been traversing Bergamo’s city walls, connecting the modern city center to the medieval heart of the city. The view along the way is superb.
2. Stroll along the 5 km of the Venetian Walls, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk the entire 5 km of the Venetian Walls, the stars of Bergamo’s unmistakable skyline. The sunset viewed from the ramparts is priceless! Here’s a secret: through the telescopes you’ll find along the way, you can even see Milan!
3. Visit just one museum to encounter all the masters of the Renaissance: the Accademia Carrara. Botticelli, Bellini, Raphael, Titian, Lotto, and the great Bergamo portraitist Moroni. Meet the greats of 16th-century Italian art—they’re all at the Accademia Carrara: its collection is among the most valuable in Europe.
4. Listen to Donizetti’s music in his birthplace. Step inside the great composer’s birthplace, where you can grasp the essence of his story and hear his works echoing within these ancient walls.
5. Enjoy nature just a short walk from the city. An unusual way to discover Bergamo’s green heart is to explore the protected area of Parco dei Colli, with its stairways and trails winding through woods and terraced fields, offering unexpected views.
6. Shake hands with a Nobel laureate. The city’s season of major events never ends: meet the Nobel laureates at BergamoScienza, discover Piazza Vecchia transformed into a designer garden, and choose from festivals featuring storytelling, philosophy, cinema, and much more.
7. Taste Stracciatella at the ice cream shop where it was invented. Cream ice cream with melted chocolate crunch. How did this idea come about? To find out, we recommend visiting “La Marianna” in Colle Aperto, the ice cream shop where children’s favorite flavor was invented.
8. Count the hundred chimes of the Campanone. Don’t miss this centuries-old tradition: every evening at 10 p.m. in Piazza Vecchia, the large bell at the top of the civic tower rings 100 times—a tradition that once served to alert residents that the city gates were closing.
9. Touch… good luck! A little good-luck ritual: on the gate of the Colleoni Chapel, there’s a coat of arms depicting the attributes of the military leader Bartolomeo Colleoni. There are three of them, and they’re beautifully polished… it’s said that rubbing them brings great rewards!
10. Experience the city from sunset to sunrise. Discover Bergamo by night: happy hour at the little bars in Piazza Pontida with cocktails, delicious buffets, and DJ sets. The evening continues in Borgo Santa Caterina, full of small bars and music—a great starting point from which to head out to dance at a club or enjoy a live concert.
Pair it all with traditional dishes like polenta or casoncelli and local wines such as Valcalepio or Moscato di Scanzo—and… your vacation is all set!
