Few staff. Any staff encountered were good but notable by their invisibility. Food was not very good. Breakfast food obviously put out early and showed signs of drying out, the bacon especially was desiccated Staff at breakfast present only at weekend to check room numbers. The one dinner we had on the day of arrival would have made school dinners look luxurious, overcooked tinned veg and reheated potatoes. We would gladly have paid more for a decent meal. Cake with cream for dessert was nice. Reception desk was not manned, staff were in a back room. During the week on two days someone in mud streaked clothes came in and helped themselves, scooping food up by hand. This was offputting and we just had cereal and toast. A complaint was made to the hotel. The bar was not open until 4pm. No snacks were available during the day except £29+ afternoon tea.The mattresses were comfortable but the beds themselves looked as if they were knocked up from offcuts from b&q. Room a good size. Bathroom nicely renovated but whoever put the fittings in hadn't thought that the users were not 7' giants with door hooks too high to use and a tiny shelf high over the toilet just right for things to fall into the loo. No bathmat provided: a towel had to be used. On the surface the POW looks as it did in it's former days as a grand hotel which we experienced many years ago. The actuality was very different.
