Bear Lake Reserve is our favorite resort in the Carolinas. This was our second visit. We loved the close proximity of this condo to the clubhouse. The 5 mile journey along the steep, twisty, narrow mountain road (devoid of guardrails) can be a bit daunting, especially at night. Staying closer to the lodge meant less driving in and out … a definite plus!
The staff, grounds and food were top notch. Kayaking, boating, swimming and saunas were a daily routine. The mountain beauty was zen like and exquisite. Nothing compares to the views surrounding this pristine mountain lake …. except perhaps the pastries.
As a former tv producer for Food Network, my palate is picky. Ordinarily, compliments on cuisine are few and far between. Having tasted some of the best foods in the world during my career, I can honestly say that Pastry Chef “G’s” blueberry muffins were in fact the best I’ve ever had … anywhere! And I know my blueberry muffins!
But, all things considered, perhaps the most impressive moment occurred just as we entered the condo at the very beginning of our stay. There on the wall, cast off in the corner, was an out of place painting that did not fit the well appointed mountain decor. Upon closer examination, we realized that It was an image of the Coney Island Wonder Wheel in NYC.. We couldn’t believe it! Coney Island was where we had our first date twenty three years ago. Here we were on our first vacation as empty nesters after 2 kids and more than 2 decades of marriage. and there on the wall was a reminder of where it all began. It was a sign. Bear Lake is indeed magical. We intend to one day call it our second home.
