'We frequently choose older motels that cost less. We look closely at their photos, and if it looks updated and clean we choose it. Usually we find it is owned/managed by an immigrant family, frequently from the Subcontinent, and they do an excellent job with the older property. The Royal Inn in Hudson, Wis., is such a place. It was very clean, the air conditioning worked well on a hot day, parked right in front of our room. Convenient location.'

'This hotel was absolutely disgusting. As soon as we walked in, it smelled like a smoke shack. The carpet in our room was sticky and turned your feet black if you walked barefoot. It also looked like it had not been vacuumed in a while. Only 2 out of the 6 lights above the bathroom sink worked. There were empty beer bottles under the bed. Car air fresheners hanging from the lamp. The pool wasn't open at all. The breakfast was a joke with options of eggs and sausage and waffles that tasted...

'I have never had to request a new room until this stay. The room smelt terrible like cigarettes and fried food. We requested a new room as the smell was nauseating. The second room was dirty- stains on bedding, hair in bathroom sink, and looked like soda had sprayed all over the nightstand. The gentleman working the counter was helpful and apologetic.'
