This hotel probably used to be really nice 50 years ago, but hasn't been invested in or maintained properly and feels like it. Air con units are loud and the remotes may not work. Furniture is old and ugly. The service is strange. When I checked out without bringing my TV remote to the front desk, they told me I had to go back to my room and get it (rather than get it themselves). They make you wear a wrist-band the whole time you're in the hotel to prove you're a guest. On checking out, they give you a piece of paper to show the bellman at the front to prove you've checked out (and presumably) not stolen anything. Instead of good service, one feels as though one is mistrusted.
