ABOUT OUR PLACE
Many details in this space were specially curated to provide, not just a place for our guests to lay their head, but a unique, historical experience. Whether they be the Tiffany stained glass chandelier and reading lamp, the roll-top desk (about the same age as the building), or the victorian style furniture and hand crafted kitchen cabinetry, we hope this place helps transport you and your imagination back to the time in which it was built.
In addition, we've decided to make your experience even more unique by adorning the walls with shelves that show off a small part of a collection of miniature soldiers we inherited from my grandfather, who was a Colonel in the US Air Force.
El Paso is home to Fort Bliss, which was established in 1878, right around the same time this neighborhood, now known as the Magoffin Historic District, saw its beginnings. Fort Bliss played a huge role in the development of the region, and continues to greatly influence El Paso to this day, so we felt it even more fitting for us to allow our guests to enjoy our tribute to the bravery of many warriors throughout history.
In the entryway and office/work space, you'll see Native American warriors, Buffalo Soldiers, Civil War and Spanish American War displays, as well as marines from many different eras, troops from WWI, WWII and even an army band and an air craft carrier deck crew. In the livingroom you'll find the King and Queen of England and their Royal Guards and Bands, as well as many other English troops and cavalry from different eras. You'll also see a number of infantry and cavalry displays from India and Nepal like the Sikhs, Bengal, Madras, Punjab and Gurkha. We also display French, Canadian and African armies, as well as those of the Scots, Irish, Argentine, Russian and German.
We hope you enjoy being able to look at all of these treasures, and we respectfully ask that you not touch, grab, handle, move or take any of them. They are not toys and are only for your viewing pleasure.
ABOUT THE AREA
The Magoffin neighborhood is on the eastern edge of downtown El Paso, and this property is basically in the middle, but on the south side of the neighborhood. On our street there is a smattering of single family homes, duplexes, apartment buildings, law offices and some small businesses.
This neighborhood was developed in the late 1800s, after the arrival of the railroad. It was originally home to more affluent folks, and at that time was described as one of the swankiest hoods in town. Most of the residents now are elderly or working class.
Our street is wide because it was designed for horse drawn carriages. It was a main east-west thoroughfare, having been part of the old Butterfield Stagecoach mail route. El Paso's Franklin Station was an important stop on that trail because it is about halfway between its origin, St. Louis and its destination, San Fran. There even used to be a horse drawn street car that passed right in front of our place. The houses were built very close to the street, with a little room for front yards.
Though there is no longer a street car to take you downtown, we are located just a hop, skip and a jump away. About 2 blocks due west you'll find the Mexican Consulate General and another 3 blocks down is our justice complex, where the El Paso County Courthouse, the federal building and two federal courthouses are located. Walk just a half block further and you'll see Aztec Park and The Tap, El Paso's most famous downtown dive bar. They have a great jukebox, pool tables, live music, and of course cold beer and strong cocktails. The food is amazing, but even more so, the Nachos a la Mexicana!
From there, when you head 3 blocks north and one block further to the west, you will end up in the main square called San Jacinto Plaza or La Plaza de los Lagartos. There are a number of great bars and restaurants, as well as beautiful historic buildings all around. The City's library is just around the corner, and so is Southwest University Park, home of our Triple A, Pacific League baseball team, the Chihuahuas, as well as a minor league soccer team, the Locomotive.
If you head south and west from the square, you'll come across the amazing Plaza Theatre, the El Paso Museum of Art and the Paso del Norte Hotel, which has a prolific Tiffany stained glass dome gracing the roof of its bar. It's a must see. The hotel is on El Paso Street, which was recently beautified and has come to be known as El Paseo de las Luces. At night it lights up and takes you all the way down to the international port of entry, where you can walk over the bridge and straight into Cd. Juarez, in Mexico. They have also invested in the street that would be the continuation of El Paso street on the Mexican side, which is named Avenida Juarez. Just a few blocks in and you can have a margarita where the cocktail was invented, the Kentucky Club, which is a bar that has been in business since the 1920's.
If you decide to take a stroll down El Paso Street and you cross Paisano Avenue, you find yourself in one of the city's oldest, most historic and famous neighborhoods, El Segundo Barrio, or the Second Ward. The flagship historic structure in this neighborhood is the beautiful Sagrado Corazon (Sacred Heart) church, just a block east of El Paso Street, on 4th and Oregon. There is a plethora of really amazing murals throughout Segundo that help recount its history as the starting point for hundreds of thousands of immigrants, if not more, as they crossed the Rio Grande in search of a better life. We call it the New Ellis Island. Segundo also housed many Mexicans who fled their country during the Mexican Revolution, and famous characters like Francisco Madero and Pancho Villa graced its streets with their presence back in the early 1900s. The cultural value that this area provides El Paso is like no other. It really is one of the most unique and vibrant parts of the city.
Back to the apartment, there is a bus stop almost directly across the street that can get you on a bus that will take you downtown, if you don't fancy the stroll. There is a bike rental station just in front of the County Courthouse, and you should also be able to find scooters spread about the area. When you head east, about 2 blocks away you'll get to a laundromat, and another couple of blocks down is a very interesting looking Gothic style Catholic church.
There is lots to do and see in downtown El Paso. If you need help finding something or getting around, let us know.
